Ideas for City Breaks on a Budget

Travellers looking for a city break on a budget would do well to check out a new list of free activities on offer in some of the world’s most popular urban destinations.

The guide to free day trips and attractions has been compiled by publisher DK Travel, and covers a wide range of popular European and US city destinations. Cheap flights to Spain make Barcelona a big favourite for Europeans looking for a city break also offering easy access to great beaches. On top of the cheap option of days out at the beach, Barcelona offers the La Rambla street – a lively, tree-lined avenue offering museums, bars, cafes and markets which visitors can wander around for hours. The city’s Port Olimpic area was also recommended as a great place to explore for free.

Visitors to Amsterdam were advised to visit both the Magere Brug bridge and Begijnhof chapel for free photo opportunities and scenic views. The city’s Vondelpark was also said to be a great option for families wanting to make the most of fine, sunny days.

City breaks to Florence are always popular among culture vultures looking to soak up the city’s rich history and heritage, and the Duomo and Chiesa di Santa Croce can both be viewed at no charge. Many famous Florentines are buried in the Chiesa di Santa Croce, including Dante, Galileo, Machiavelli and Michelangelo.

Visitors to New York without the budgets to blow on Broadway shows and shopping were advised to explore Central Park for a variety of free attractions. Visitors to Berlin can escape the city for a day and head out into the nearby forest of Grunewald for a taste of the local countryside, while those enjoying a city break in Paris were advised to visit the city’s Pere Lachaise cemetery. Famous figures buried there include Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Edith Piaf.
