Heathrow Airport Snow Closure

Fresh Wave of Snow Causes More Airport Drama

Passengers face a long wait at Heathow

The latest onslaught of winter weather has caused even more flight cancellations across Europe, throwing thousands of holiday-makers plans into chaos. The vast majority of flights in and out of European airports were either cancelled or delayed over the weekend including busy airports in London, Frankfurt and Brussels. Yesterday Heathrow Airport had to cancel all arriving flights and only allowed a small selection of departing flights to leave the airspace. Snow and ice forced further delays as ground staff worked hard to clear the runways. A statement released on Heathrow’s website last night stated that preparations were underway for a full reopening today (20th December) in an updated release airport officials have announced this morning that

“Heathrow Airport will be open and operating a limited schedule of arrivals and departures today, but we expect further cancellations and delays in the coming days, as airlines move diverted aircraft and crew back to their normal positions and we continue to manage the impacts of the poor weather over the weekend and in the days ahead”.

Across Europe many airports were facing the same fate. In Germany passengers arriving at the Lufthansa Airport were forced to sleep in the terminal overnight after regional and domestic flights were cancelled. The same scenario occurred in Amsterdam as around 700 passengers took to their camp beds in Schipol Airport. Again passengers are advised to check with their airlines before setting off to the airport.
