Heathrow airport has taken advantage of the romantic mood surrounding Valentine’s Day by reporting that passengers at its terminals share more than 1200 kisses day – that’s one every 49 seconds!
As passengers arrive and depart, emotional ‘welcome backs’ as well as farewells bump up the smooch count around the airport, making an average of 74 kisses per hour. The international hub’s third terminal turns out to generate the most affection of all the terminals, with an average of 29 kisses every hour. The terminal was the setting for part of the Richard Curtis film Love Actually so perhaps some of the movie magic has rubbed off onto passengers!
Valentine’s Day provides a great excuse for a quick romantic getaway, and it is estimated that almost 500,000 people will have jetted off from Heathrow for a break over the four days between 10 February and Valentine’s Day. Flights to New York for a loved-up city break were the most popular option from the busy hub.
The second most popular romantic getaway destination was Dubai, where couples can indulge their love of shopping, soak up some sun at the beach, then maybe even hit the ski slopes at Ski Dubai – the city’s indoor ski centre. Dublin came in at third place, offering great food, historical architecture and of the course, the Guinness brewery! Amsterdam and Frankfurt followed closely behind as the fourth and fifth most popular Valentine’s destinations from Heathrow.
