The Greek national cricket team are set to invite the Pakistan cricket team for an international cricket festival on the island of Corfu for next year. The aim of the festival is to promote cricket within Greece whilst bringing the sports together in a friendly format uniting continents, countries and communities in a magical place.
The Hellenic Cricket Federation organised the event then unveiled it during a function at the Long Room within Lords Cricket ground. The head of the Hellenic Cricket Federation, Nikitas Iosif, attended the event and told that the festival is to be held during May, June, September and October. Most of the games will be in Corfu, though other Ionian Island’s will also play their part.
Pakistan is the current world 20/20 champions and sealing their service during the cricket festival would be a great attraction for people on the island to come and enjoy. There is still a chance that Pakistan could pull out due to international commitments but they are willing to participate if possible. Nikitas Iosif would be delighted to seal the Pakistan A team for a visit but there participation in any format would be a coup in itself.
There are currently 21 cricket clubs throughout Greece, and 13 of those are located on Corfu. Greece itself didn’t have a registered national team until 1996 when it became a member of the European and International Cricket Councils. The Hellenic Cricket Federation is ambitious in terms of what Greece can achieve in the future, and currently believes they are one of the best outfits in Europe.
