The winner of the ‘Best Job in the World’ has finished his six month stint as caretaker of the beautiful Hamilton Island. Ben Southall beat more than 34,000 applicants for the desirable position, living on this tropical island as part of an Australian tourism marketing campaign. Now Southall begins his next new job, travelling the world to promote tourism to the state of Queensland. Australia’s tourism industry is unveiling a new national long term strategy to provide investment and innovation to their tourist market.
With more than eight million dollars granted to the development of the tourist sector, the strategy aims to unite the industry and encourage further investment from the private sector. By highlighting the importance of the tourist sector, industry leaders aim to increase the economic position of tourism in Australia.
The landscape of the tourism industry has changed dramatically over the past ten years; global competition has intensified and left the consumer in the driving seat. The influx of social networking sites and online travel guides has led to instant tourist reviews of holiday resorts, this is fast becoming to primary source of holiday information for many modern holidaymakers.
One of the first places to get a tourism revamp is Perth; both the international and domestic airports will get a modern facelift along with a extensive remodelling of many of Perth’s accommodation facilities.
Ben Southall’s new job as a roving ambassador for the Australian tourist industry will bring in much needed media attention to the state of Queensland. The former charity worker will appear in a six part national Geographic documentary charting his time on the island and allowing viewers to experience the Queensland islands through his eyes.
