Although Lanzarote has long been a favourite among Brits for a winter sun getaway, the volcanic island is a great choice year-round, and is starting to attract its own celebrity fans, according to the Daily Mail’s travel writer Jennifer Cox.
Lanzarote holidays are said to have become a regular habit of Spanish movie star Penelope Cruz after she fell in love with the island during the filming of the film Broken Embraces. Formula 1 driver and former World Champion Jensen Button is said to have been visiting Lanzarote for years, and Channel 4 also recently finished shooting the series Celebrity Five Go To… on the Spanish island.
Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the Canaries, lying the furthest east in the archipelago. Its rocky landscape and twisted rock formations are the result of volcanic activity over the centuries, and this dramatic scenery, combined with its plentiful beaches, warm Atlantic water and numerous resorts to choose from keep visitors returning year after year.
The island still has one semi-active volcano – Timanfaya – which bubbles ferociously 43 feet below the surface, and provides heat used to cook dishes at the ‘El Diablo’ restaurant nearby. Local artist César Manrique is responsible for much of the preservation work done on Lanzarote, and his dramatic sculptures can be seen around the island. Visitors can also take a bus tour which Manrique blasted through the volcanic rocks, as well as visit his house in Tahiche, built into underground caves formed from lava bubbles.
All inclusive holidays to Playa Blanca on Lanzarote are a good option for families looking for a convenient and good value summer or winter break, while Puerto del Carmen holidays provide all the convenience of the island’s most popular resort.
