Spain is set to become the home of Europe’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster, after construction began on a new attraction at the PortAventura theme park in the north-east of the country.
The new ride, which has yet to be given a name, will hits speeds of up to 134kmph as it descends from a height of 78m – a record for any rollercoaster in Europe. When completed, the ride will edge out the current record-holder for height, the Silver Star ride at Europa Park in Germany.
The design theme for the ride will take inspiration from historic expeditions in the Himalayan mountains, with a form resembling a giant mountain. Sections of the ride where the track travels underground will be intended to recreate scenes of explorers travelling underground and discovering new canyons and caves. The huge new attraction forms part of a £69 million investment by PortAventura into new features and upgrade works on existing attractions and facilities.
2011 saw the addition of the SesamoAventura children’s play area to the park, which is located around an hour’s drive from Barcelona, in Salou. The park also features other spectacular rides, including the Furious Baco, Hurakan Condor and the Dragon Khan.
