Viva Las Benidorm?

Spanish Hotspot Set To Become Gambling Capital of Europe.

Tourism officials have unveiled plans to turn one of Europe’s top destinations into one of the most popular gambling destinations in the world. Benidorm is set to be Spain’s answer to Las Vegas as luxury hotels will hopefully be granted the permission to open casinos within their premises. The resort already attracts over one million British tourists each year, if the application to change the existing laws are approved it is hoped that the resort will turn into a Mecca for those that like a flutter! The chairman of the Benidorm Hoteliers association has spoken out about his faith in the project explaining that ‘It’s important to do it as quickly as possible, as our future depends on attracting this type of tourist.’ If hotel bosses are granted permission to allow gambling in their hotels this will open the door to a wide range of Vegas style attractions such as roulette wheels, slot machines and card games. The plans have the backing of many of the official tourism boards in the Costa Blanca region, all hoping that the changes will attract more visitors to the area. In 2009 Benidorm recorded its lowest visitor numbers in over two decades as passengers opted for more far flung destinations such as Egypt and the Caribbean. This year the resort has pulled out of the stops to encourage travellers to return to Spain with brand new hotels and attractions unveiled along with a move towards offering a more cultural Benidorm experience. Despite the drop in numbers it is still one of Europe’s most popular destinations, attracting over six million visitors each year.
