Holidays in Menorca are a favourite with families. Menorca is just 21 miles from Majorca and although the second largest of the Balearic Islands, it is definitely more sedate than it’s noisier neighbours Majorca and Ibiza. The island has almost as many beaches as these two islands put together which is great for both sun seekers and water sports fans amongst us. The most popular holiday resorts reside on the south coast and you can find a string of picturesque fishing villages along the island’s craggier north shore.

Despite the fact that it’s only a 2 hour flight from the UK to reach Menorca and becoming increasingly popular with families, couples and groups, the island has been sheltered from the effects of development over the years, undergoing very little change. This makes a holiday in Menorca ideal for a short break or even a long weekend. Popular hotspots include Placa Espanada the largest square on the island, Cales Coves and Castell de Sant Nicolau – all providing a little piece of Menorcan history.

Menorca - Plenty Of Activities To Keep You Busy Throughout The Day

Menorca is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in the Balearic Islands, with fine white sand and warm turquoise waters. The beaches have plenty of amenities, enough to keep the whole family occupied and entertained during your holidays. Visit Son Bou, the longest beach on the island at 3km or head south east to Cala Alcaufar to experience one of the beautiful bays.

If activity based Menorca holidays are on the agenda then why not try some mountain biking, horse riding or hiking, following the many trails that criss-cross the island. The views are simply breathtaking and cycling is great way to see local island life. Head towards Alayor and Mercadel or the "Cami de Cavalls" coastline to stop and swim. Scuba diving is also a favourite past-time of holiday makers visiting Menorca. The island is littered with spectacular subterranean caverns ready to be explored.

If you want to relax and take in the scenery during your holidays to Menorca then take a glass-bottomed boat tour. It will take you out around the island to see marine life and some allow passengers to dive off and explore the surroundings.

If you are feeling adventurous during your holidays in Menorca, hire a car and drive to Menorca’s highest point, Monte Toro. Or head to the cliff tops for panoramic views at Cala Galdana.

Menorca - Some Brilliant Restaurants To Choose From

A Menorca holiday would not be complete without trying the local speciality lobster stew or caldereta de llagosta. Not surprisingly, there are several good features high on the menu, but resorts cater for a wide range of Europeans tastes as well as the more traditional Spanish dishes we have all come to expect.

Menorca is famous across Spain for its cheese. Mahon Cheese is produced according to strict standards. It is in square shape with a yellow, oily, rind and is cured for up to two years.

If you’re looking to spend a day out shopping, head for the capital Mahon, where you can pick up anything from clothes to souvenirs and local produce. Many of the resorts around the island tend to be quite small and tend to simply serve the basics.

As for public transport, it is largely air conditioned coaches that travel regularly between the capital and the resorts. Taxis are also good but as always, remember to ask the rate before getting in.

Weather and Climate

When you take your holidays in Menorca you will find it hard to believe that it is actually the coolest and wettest of the Balearic Islands. The island tends to receive most of its annual rainfall during the winter months which helps to give the island its lush green environment.

Annually, Menorca receives over 300 days of sunshine and about 8-11 hours of sun per day peaking at around 28C and even in winter months when those temperatures are ‘lower’ which is about 12 degrees Celsius you still get 3-5 hours of sunshine per day.
