There has been a series of robberies and express kidnappings on or around the motorway connecting Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Ghent, Dunkirk and the Channel Ports. See Safety and Security – Local Travel – Road Travel.
There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. See Safety and Security - Terrorism.
The Dutch Government introduced compulsory identification in January 2005. Everybody over the age of 14 is required to show a valid identity document to police officers and other law enforcement authorities on their request. See Local Laws and Customs.
You should be alert to the dangers of street crime in the cities.
