With much to do both day and night, Portimao has become a very popular destination within Portugal’s Algarve. The resort is quite steep in places so those who suffer from walking difficulties are advised to revise the situation beforehand. The beach is located a little south of the main centre of the city and it is quite large with pale sands and warm waters.

The transfer time from Faro Airport will take around 30 minutes, and during this time it’s a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings in the Algarve.

Those who enjoy self catering on holidays have fine villas and apartments to choose from, but if you are looking for half board or all inclusive options on holiday choose from the 2 to 5 star rated hotels in the region.

There is a fine and reliable bus service in Portimao that will take you to various other places in the Algarve on your holiday. You can also use the taxi service available though this will of course be a little more expensive.

Portimao – Fun & Activities

Family on holiday Down by the beach is where many tourists spend their time when visiting Portimao, there you can enjoy the glorious sunshine and work on your summer tan all day. If lazing around is not your style you can always choose from the various water sports available at the beach, including jet skiing, water skiing, scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing and windsurfing.

Other activities include horse riding and trips to the nearby water park which has many rides and slides. Golf is one activity that is synonymous with the whole Algarve region and a sport which many travel to the south of Portugal to enjoy. You have the pick of various courses to enjoy a round or two of golf on your holiday.

The beautiful natural landscape is just waiting to be explored and discovered, many people enjoy taking long walks to the cliff tops uncovering truly picturesque views. There are plenty of excursions taking you straight to the main attractions of the area like the local museum and cathedrals, but most significantly to the Monchique Mountains. There are also excursions to Portugal’s capital Lisbon to enjoy some sightseeing and shopping. It is best to do your holiday shopping in Lisbon, while Portimao has some good shops they don’t offer as much as the capital.

You can enjoy the very lively nightlife that occurs in Portimao on the evening where there are plenty of bars and pubs to start off the fun on warm nights. The later it gets the more things tend to open up like clubs and discos where many enjoy heading towards in order to dance and party long into the night and then into the morning.

Portimao Weather and Climate

The fantastic weather that Portimao enjoys is the icing on the cake making it a very desirable destination for summer holidays. The best time to visit is of course during summer where the temperature averages around 30°C, the peak summer months of July and August see the best of this weather. During the peak months you can expect cloudless skies and endless hours of sun each and every day.

The weather throughout the whole year tends to stay very warm with temperatures rarely dropping below 15°C even during winter. The estimated 12 hours of sunshine over summer does drop to 6 over the winter, but this means there is still plenty of time to enjoy it. Between November and March is when most of the rainfall occurs in Portimao despite staying relatively warm. At the end of March the temperatures will again begin to rise before eventually reaching summer once again.
