The Red Sea has long been one of the most popular destinations for people wanting to experience a diving holiday. The stunning coral reef is a fantastic sight and one that tourists from all over the world want to explore. However scientists got more than they bargained for when they chanced upon a moment of high drama within the reef. Whilst on a dive, Omri Bronstein from Tel Aviv University discovered a moon jellyfish being sucked into the parted jaws of a mushroom coral. This is the first time that such an event has been documented and has caused controversy with many scientists baffled by how the coral managed to catch the jellyfish. The jellyfish were present in large numbers due to a seasonal bloom caused by rising ocean currents. The coral itself has very limited movement and is not attached to the sea floor, their usual diet consists of plankton, and the added jellyfish will provide valuable protein. The ability to utilise a wide range of food sources and to take advantage of the abundance of jellyfish, gives the mushroom coral a great advantage compared to other coral that are unable to prey on larger items.
This exciting discovery will add to the appeal of Red Sea diving holidays. Many of the surrounding countries offer diving packages in luxury resorts, ideal for those wanting a relaxing break exploring the underwater world. This event showcases the changing world underneath the waters where it seems that all bets are off!
