A recent report has shown that the Canary Islands are growing increasingly popular with winter holiday makers. The Canary Islands Tourist Board has compiled the data over the past few years and has recently revealed their findings. Tenerife is firmly in the top spot as the most popular island with Lanzarote following closely behind; Gran Canaria is the third most popular winter sun destination.
The figures collected support the findings published by ‘On the Beach’ which show that Tenerife is the most popular destination for those seeking winter sun. Holiday sales to the island are up by 11% this year.
The promotions executive for the Spanish Tourist Office, revealed that British tourist were an invaluable market for the islands, followed closely by German holidaymakers. It was also revealed that although mainland Spain benefits from summer orientated tourism, the Canary Islands are proving to be a lucrative spot for winter sun holidays.
The Canary Islands provide year round entertainment and events, a possible reason for so many tourists flocking there every year. Festivals play a huge part in the islands appeal, the Canary Islands Music Festival is the only European festival held during winter. The event takes place from January to February every year, serving to promote high cultural tourism to the area and showcasing a range of classical music pieces. Winter holidays are becoming increasingly popular, with many people opting to take advantage of the cheaper prices and visit a destination that is still benefiting from summer sun.
