Holidays in Cyprus, no longer a divided choice?
September 25th 2009 by PaulHow long will it be before Holidays in Cyprus are longer appended by either North? Or South? This historic island has been separated for 35 years, with numerous attempts at seeking a settlement. The reunification of Cyprus appears to be back on the agenda with talks reportedly gathering momentum.
What will it mean for those of us looking to take out holidays in Cyprus over the coming year? Well we shouldn’t hold our breath, there are unlikely to be any quick wins. The issue is hugely complex and was exacerbated by a ruling in the Court of European Justice in April earlier this year, supporting the property rights of those forcibly evicted in the conflict over 35 years ago.
1.3 million Britons choose to take their holidays in Cyprus each year. We have close ties with the island with both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities at home and an estimated 60,000 ex pats resident on the island. It is no surprise that Holidays in Cyprus remain a firm favourite at home.
Tourism and property are the main contributors to the island’s economy, both North and South. This issue over property rights and compensation will need to be addressed in order to maximise the peace dividend for the islanders.
A single island and single government can only make holidays in Cyprus a more attractive choice in a competitive market. If they eventually get it right it can only benefit the island and it’s residents. These are little steps and progress is positive, but there is surely a long way to go, so we Brits will continue to make choice about our Holidays in Cyprus, regardless of whether it’s North or South.
